For the past five years, I've had the privilege of serving the people of Appomattox on Town Council. In a six-member body, meaningful progress requires more than a good idea, it takes quiet persistence, collaboration, and follow-through.

Of course, I didn't do it alone. I'm proud of Town Staff and my fellow Council members for what we have accomplished in a few short years. Below are some of the areas where I've helped push good ideas into action:

PUBLIC SAFETY

  • Strengthened our partnership with the Sheriff's Office by securing dedicated funding lines for the K9 program, training, and officer equipment.
  • Backed funding efforts for new fire trucks and essential life safety tools for the Appomattox Volunteer Fire Department.

INFRASTRUCTURE

  • Secured nearly $5 million in grants and long-term bonds (at just 2.5%) to strengthen our water and sewer systems.
  • Raised early concerns about our water access agreement expiring in 2030, beginning long-term planning.
  • Championed the Lee Grant Improvement Project to repair dangerous sidewalks and a too-narrow roadway.
  • Advocated for the adoption of an updated building and property maintenance code.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT & EDUCATION

  • Marketed Appomattox to regional and national investors. Not every pitch succeeded, but one did: a planned $7 billion investment at the County IDA park.
  • Organized an Artificial Intelligence program at Appomattox County High School and secured $75,000 in funding for a GPU cluster, opening doors for our students in tomorrow's economy.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT

  • Reformed how local organizations apply for public funding, streamlining the process and increasing fairness and transparency.
  • Supported Appomattox Youth Sports through budget advocacy.
  • Led efforts to revamp the town's tourism image and supported the Appomattox Tourism Committee in launching the new Historic Appomattox brand.

GOOD GOVERNANCE

  • Championed the hiring of the town's first Human Resources specialist and supported a full review of compensation and benefit, in order to remain competitive with other employers.
  • Insisted on fair enforcement of overdue meals tax—no exceptions.
  • Chaired the Ethics Committee and led the effort to adopt a formal ethics pledge for the first time in nearly two decades.

TRANSPARENCY & RECORDS

  • Steered the effort to update the Council Handbook, codifying long-standing norms into a publicly accountable format.
  • Led the digitization of over a century of Times-Virginian archives and compiled council minutes dating to 1930.
  • Ensured every council meeting is now recorded and uploaded to YouTube for public access.

READY TO SERVE THE COUNTY

This experience has prepared me to tackle the challenges facing Appomattox County. I know how to build consensus, manage budgets, and get things done. Most importantly, I understand that good governance requires both vision and the hard work to make that vision reality.
