Chief Deputy Donald D. Simpson with the Appomattox County Sheriff’s Department announced today his candidacy for the sheriff position.

The news comes a day after Sheriff Barry E. Letterman of the Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday his decision to retire from his position effective Dec. 31, when his term ends.

“Today I ask for your support as I announce my intention to seek the office of Sheriff for Appomattox County,” Simpson wrote. “I am a life-long resident of Appomattox County. I have 25 years of dedicated law enforcement service with the Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office, the last seven as Chief Deputy. As Sheriff I promise to continue to deliver fair, responsible, and impartial law enforcement service to every citizen. I look forward to meeting each of you in my campaign and discussing my vision for your Sheriff’s office.”
