Appomattox County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Donald Simpson on Thursday announced his candidacy to replace retiring Sheriff Barry Letterman.

Simpson is a 25-year veteran of the county sheriff’s office and has served as chief deputy for seven years.

“As Sheriff I promise to continue to deliver fair, responsible, and impartial law enforcement service to every citizen,” Simpson said in a news release Thursday.

Letterman announced Wednesday he would retire at the end of the year. He has served as Appomattox County sheriff for eight years.

Last month, Bedford County Sheriff Michael Brown and Campbell County Sheriff Steve Hutcherson each also announced their upcoming retirements.
